Lovell is located north of Fryeburg along Route 5. Today the town of 47.9 square miles has a year round population of just over 1000 before the summer residents quadruple the population. The primary reason for the annual increase is the influx of seasonal property owners around 9 mile long Kezar Lake, considered by many to be “the most beautiful lake in Maine”.
Lovell was settled in 1777 and first known as New Suncook Plantation. New Suncook Plantation was incorporated as a town on November 15, 1800, and was renamed after Captain John Lovewell, who led the forces in the Dummer’s War against the Sokokis Abenaki Indians in what is now Fryeburg.
Early on the Kezar River provided water power for industry. In the 19th century, mills produced spools, long lumber, shooks, axe handles, ox goads, carriages, sleighs, harness, cabinet work and coffins, as well as boots and shoes. Good soil helped farms prospehttp://www.nefc.org/r. Following the Civil War the railroad connected to Fryeburg, and tourists discovered the beauty of Kezar Lake. Inns and hotels opened, and the town remains a summer resort.
